Vandals caused damage to nine cars in neighbouring York streets.
And it may have been even worse had residents not intervened.
Wing mirrors and headlights were smashed in the incident at around 5.40am on Sunday (September 30).
The cars were parked in Grosvenor Terrace, Grosvenor Road and Newborough Street.
Residents woken by the noise went out and detained two people until the police arrived. One was said to be in possession of a section of scaffolding pole.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said:

Two local men, aged 22 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and affray after nine parked cars were damaged.
The damage to the vehicles included wing mirrors and headlights.
The men were initially detained by members of the public before they were taken into custody.
Following questioning they were released under investigation while enquiries continue.
