Forget Three Lions. Roll over World In Motion. The England team have a new World Cup anthem – penned by two York school teachers.
Bring It Home by Disco Mister is a catchy and passionate fans’ tribute to Roy Hodgson’s team with an earworm of a chorus which could easily be taken up on the terraces.
The song is the work of two members of staff at Huntington School: Robin Parmiter, who teaches religion, philosophy and ethics, and Ian Wilson, a supply teacher who specialises in music tech.
More original – and more heartfelt – than the official England 2014 song, Gary Barlow’s rehash of an old Take That hit Greatest Day, Bring It Home had clocked more than 17,000 views on YouTube by Saturday lunch time (May 10).
The video was shot at Huntington School by head of English media Karl Elwell, with Year 11 pupil Lili Brewin as production assistant.
Here’s hoping that come July 13, we hear it echoing round the Estádio do Maracanã as Steven Gerrard hoists the World Cup in the air in front of vanquished hosts Brazil.
Sing along
Here are the lyrics to Bring It Home so you can join in this summer: © Disco Mister.
We give you our hopes
And all our fears
The joys of victories
Our penalty tears.
We believe, but
Oh we doubt.
But we’ll keep singing and
Raise our shouts, singing
Come on England
Here we go
The strength of three lions
Against the world.
Come on England
Here we go
The strength of three lions
Against the world.
CHORUS
Sing hey, hey, here we go
Come on England
Bring it home
Sing hey, hey, here we go
Come on England
Bring it – hey
Hey, hey, here we go
Come on England
Bring it home
Sing hey, hey, here we go
Come on England
Bring it home
We call all legends
We call all fans
Lift your spirits
For this ancient land.
The skill of Gascoigne,
Of Rooney and Barnes.
The passion of Pearce,
Robson and Hurst.
The goals of Charlton,
Lineker and Owen.
The magic of Matthews,
Beckham and Waddle.
The power of Gerrard,
the strength of Moore.
The hands of Shilton –
we call on you all.
CHORUS
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
We don’t need Pele
Or the ‘hand of god’.
You can have your Messis,
Ronaldos and Cruyffs.
No need for Zidane
Or Franz Beckenbauer
Platini, Maldini,
Iniesta and Xavi – no.
Because we’ve got passion
And we’ve got grit.
The strength of three lions
And plenty of spirit.
No fancy formations
No rolling around
No backstabbing winking
Just blood-stained brows
Sing
CHORUS
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home
Bring it home…
