More than 30 members of East Coast staff donned their gardening gloves and helped repaint a former railway bridge to improve a much loved cycle route near York.
East Coast’s Audit and Finance teams wanted to do something for the local community in a way that would bring together staff from several sites.
The team donated £150 to cycling charity, Sustrans by each donating £5 to take part in the Community Project Day. They set an ambitious target to paint a large section of the former rail bridge crossing the River Ouse at Naburn as well as clearing an overgrown area of land close to the bridge.
Finance controller Donna Haigh, said “We had a fantastic day, the team were really excited to be give the opportunity to take on such a great challenge and determined to make a difference.
“The toughest part of the day was definitely the race against time to try do as much as we could. Unfortunately due the undercoat needing six hours it was always going to be a struggle to finish the bridge, but we were delighted that we did at least complete one side in the final hour where the whole team really worked together in one final push.“
The project is part of the York Cares Team Challenge programme. Team Challenges bring together groups of business volunteers from York with community organisations to take part in community projects.
York Cares match the interests, skills and expertise of employers and their employees to projects, to help improve communities.
The East Coast Community Day has been welcomed by City of York Council.
Coun David Levene, City of York Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, said: “This example of community dedication to our open spaces is something we applaud and encourage. In the spirit of our Smarter York initiative which aims to inspire everyone to do their bit, I want to say thank you for helping York look as beautiful as it can, and for everybody to enjoy.”
