A group of school pupils from America will be visiting two York schools next week (25 -26 November) as part of their global citizenship curriculum work.
The fifteen grade 11 and 12 students from Arundel High School, Maryland will visit Huntington and Fulford Schools during their ten-day stay in North Yorkshire, as well as meeting the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Julie Gunnell, at the Mansion House.
Their visit was arranged after teachers from the school visited York earlier in the year and met the Lord Mayor. They were so impressed with the city that they arranged a return trip for their students.
The pupils will also take part in a Global Café event at the Guildhall during their stay, where they will meet community and business leaders and discuss issues which are common to both communities, exploring themes of education, leadership, and the environment.
Maxine Squire, Interim Director (Education and Skills), said: “Promoting global citizenship and building cross-community links is an integral part of the school curriculum in the UK, so it’s fantastic that we’re able to support the pupils from Maryland during their visit.
“The students will meet teachers and pupils from Huntington and Fulford schools to get a feel for the similarities between their education system and ours, as well as the differences. I hope it will be an interesting experience for all those involved.”
The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Julie Gunnell, said: “I’m delighted that we’re able to welcome Arundel High students to York after meeting their teachers in the summer.
“Encouraging good citizenship and trans-community engagement is vitally important and I hope that students from Fulford and Huntington Schools gain a lot from the visit as well.”
