A day after it unexpectedly rang out the Christmas bells, York Minster had to close.

A power cut at the cathedral meant that it shut its doors to the public.

The Minster authorities announced the problem via social media. In an update on its Facebook page later they posted:

Unfortunately in the interests of public safety York Minster will be closed for the remainder of the day including Evensong which is now cancelled. Apologies for any inconveniences caused.

It came only hours after volunteer bell ringers rang out a Christmas peal – the first time the bells had been heard since the Minster’s own team were disbanded in October.
