Picture it: you’re on that blow-it-all, mad, weekly shopping spree in York, you can’t spend the readies bulging in your purse quick enough and suddenly you’re in desperate need of a snack and something to wash it down.
No, the first bit hasn’t happened to me either. However when those hunger pangs strike there’s a great little deli-cum-cafe down Fossgate called The Hairy Fig.
Principally it’s a purveyor of locally-sourced and speciality foreign foods from quality Balsamic vinegars, through truffle honey and organic compte to exclusive chocolates and fresh, local bread.
In the back room is the ‘snackery’ – positively rustic with its mis-matched furniture, blend of old paraphernalia and other assorted accoutrements.
It’s a cosy area – not oodles of room – but definitely compensated for by the selection of home-made gastronomic fare, including plenty for the non-carnivorous.
Loved it the first time we happened upon it and returning soon! We thoroughly recommend it.
