A burglar who broke into the York home of an elderly man has still not been brought to justice – despite being caught clearly on CCTV.
The home in Upper Poppleton belongs to John Rhodes, 83. Two months after his wife Joan died in August 2017, John went to Stratford-on-Avon for the funeral of his cousin.
Hours before he returned, on the night of 11 October 2017, a man smashed the kitchen window and got into the house.
His torch-lit explorations of John’s house were all caught on camera. Today (6 March) the footage was shown again in a renewed appeal on BBC One’s Crimewatch Roadshow Live.
Extremely traumatic
North Yorkshire Police investigator Dave Pegg told Crimewatch: “This is probably the clearest imagery I’ve seen of a burglary in progress.
“And I’m just hoping that somebody will actually identify him and contact us.”
The burglar is described as
- in his early 20s
- about 5ft 7ins tall
- slim
- and of Eastern European appearance.
He stole jewellery belonging to John’s late wife. John found the whole experience “extremely traumatic” said Mr Pegg.
If you can identify the burglar, call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
