30 things to do in York this weekend, July 8-9 2017

It’s the first ever York Proms this Sunday – but it doesn’t make our list only because the show is already sold out.

If you’ve missed out, don’t panic there’s loads more to do – from cheering on dragons to street parties to music festivals.

You know summer’s truly here when grown men and women don fancy dress and fright wigs, climb into wooden boats, and pelt down the River Ouse to the strains of the Hawaii 5-0 theme tune… The York Rotary Annual Dragon Boat Challenge is great fun, raises loads of cash for good causes, and runs all day Sunday. Day at the Museum

The museum in question is the National Railway Museum and it’s hosting a day of family fun this Sunday. Activities include Circuit City, Science Busking and Screwball Signals – and most of them are free. More here.

Is your dog special? I mean, really special? If so he might do well in the Bishy Barkers Competition, a dog show which forms part of the party held on Bishopthorpe Road on Sunday. Other activities include children’s games, face painting and an open mic. More here.
