Thieves broke into a York supermarket in the early hours of Monday morning (July 6) and took cash from self-service tills.

They forced their way into the Sainsbury’s Local on the corner of Bootham and Bootham Row after the shop had shut at midnight.

The thieves also tried to break in to the Sainsbury’s Local on Fulford Road, near the police station.

Police were called out at about 3.10am.

Two men have since been arrested on suspicion of burglary. The men, from Coventry and aged 32 and 34, were detained after officers stopped their car on Shipton Road.
