An investigation is underway after thieves attempted to break into a cash machine in York.
The ATM at the Co-op shop on Beckfield Lane, Acomb, was attacked early today (Friday, November 16).
Police were called to the scene at around 5.10am.
Strong burning smell
Téba Diatta went to the shop early this morning to find the cash machine cordoned off.
“I saw the police car there with the cordon around the ATM,” she told YorkMix.
“It smelled strongly of burnt plastic. Whoever it was had tried to get into the cash machine and steal money.
“Where the money is dispensed, it was broken enough for someone potentially to get their hand in.”
Other witnesses said up to five police cars responded to the alarm.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Enquries and forensic tests are currently taking place and it is not currently believed that any money was stolen.”
Officers are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area, or who has any other information that could help the investigation, to call 101 quoting reference number 12180214026.
