A teddy bear was blamed for a fire in a York house today (Monday, 6 April).

Fire crews from Huntington, Acomb and York responded to reports of smoke from a residential property in New Earswick at 4.07am this morning.

After an investigation, crews confirmed the fire had been caused by a teddy bear that had been left on top of a bedside lamp.

The fire was out on arrival. Firefighters helped to ventilate the property of smoke and gave advice to the occupants.

Earlier in the evening, at 9.15pm, a crew from York went to a flooded shop on Low Petergate.

Firefighters gained access and shut off the water and electrics, and left the incident in the hands of police.
