Let’s celebrate bees

Let’s celebrate bees

This little creature is so important to the survival of gardens, it is only fitting we celebrate their existence.

11am – 4pm – peep into an observation hide with bees hard at work, meet local suppliers the Yorkshire Hive and sample different types of honey.

12.30pm – 3.30pm – get creative in the family art workshop in the Hayloft*

11am, 12 noon, 2pm & 3pm – ten minute family friendly garden talks including preferred plants and different habitats for both solitary and bumble bees.

12 noon – 5pm – feed your inspiration in the shop with bee houses, books, decorations, plants and of course honey.

Join in the family fun this Summer and get away from it all for a couple of fun filled days at Beetle Bank Open Farm.

BEETLEFEST is our newly named Annual Camping Weekend! This year it will be running from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th August.

Arrive at the Farm on Friday from 1pm find a pitch and put up your tent!

Friday Evening let your little ones reach for the stars as York Astronomy Society will be joining us to show us the night sky and for the parents relax and enjoy the night with the amazing talents of Karl Mullen, he will be taking requests on his piano from 19.30pm till 23.00pm.

Saturday Enjoy a day on the Farm and let the kids play on our huge inflatable obstacle course, Play area and our newly built Zip Wire!

The Fun Doesn’t Stop There! from 4pm Professor Dan will be joining us to entertain the children and then… Saturday Evening we will be joined a by DJ Russ, A Rodeo Bull and we will be having an all you can eat buffet with Hog Roast!

Castle Howard hosts the first Countryfile Live event to be held in the North in August 2019.

BBC Countryfile Live Castle Howard will include a range of features including the Village Green, the Countryfile Experience featuring the programme’s presenters, the Wildlife Zone, Farming in Acton and Passion for British Livestock.

The new event will represent the best of the northern countryside and celebrate regional farming. Like the Blenheim Palace show it will be one the summer’s best days out. BBC Countryfile Live Castle Howard will be open for 4 days and tickets will go on sale in November 2018.

When will tickets go on sale?
Tickets will go on sale in November 2018.

How much are tickets?
Tickets for Countryfile Live Castle Howard will be announced in November when the tickets go on sale. They will be in line with ticket prices for this year’s Countryfile Live held at Blenheim Palace, with opportunities for visitors to buy in advance at a reduced price

Are there any age restrictions to attend Countryfile Live?
Children 16 and under must be accompanied by a full paying adult.
Children 4 and under will not require a ticket.

Will my ticket allow me entry into Castle Howard?
Your Countryfile Live ticket will not permit you entry to Castle Howard and you will need to purchase a separate ticket

Is there sufficient parking?
Yes, there will be dedicated parking for the event

Will there be a dedicated traffic management plan?
Yes, the Organisers will be working with dedicated traffic management team alongside the local authorities including the police and council to ensure a smooth traffic management plan is operated and visitors enter and leave the site with limited delays

What will I see at the show?
Full details will be announced prior to tickets going on sale. You can expect to see Passion for British Livestock, the Village Green and the Craven Arms Pub Garden. There will be over 400 exhibitors to shop from as well.

Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are welcome! Although we ask that you remain as considerate as possible to your fellow visitors.

Can I camp or bring my caravan to Countryfile Live?
Yes there will be a dedicated campsite

Will the Countryfile presenters be there?
Yes we are planning that as possible will join us at the Show. We will release a programme of who is there and when before tickets go on sale

Will the programme be different each day?
The programme is designed to be the same each day although presenter appearances will vary according to attraction timetables

Kids Curators Talk: Jurassic!

Join us for the second of our new style Kids Curators Talks on one of our favourite topic- the dinosaurs! Taking place in a dedicated room, the talk takes the form of participatory involvement including hands on activity or a demonstration.

It is led by curatorial and learning members of staff and suitable for 7-11 years old with provisions included for our early years visitors and they will be in good care.

This talk is included with your museum admission. There’s no need to book.

We don’t have any bears on the farm, so we really want you to bring yours for a week long Teddy Bears Picnic.

Lots of fun to be had with you and your bear. So bring him or her along for lots of fun. Come on a treasure hunt, join us with your teddies for a picnic 11am and 2pm!

Summer in Dean’s Park: Look Up!

Enjoy a range of family activities in York Minster’s Dean’s Park this summer holidays designed to make young explorers look up!

Activities include:

  • Have-a-go arch building – be inspired by the Minster’s gothic architecture and recreate your own giant arch from foam blocks.
  • Heavens’ observation centre – Crawl inside our play den and spot clouds, planes and birds flying by. Let young imaginations run free.
  • Give and take tree – enjoy stunning views of the cathedral while you ponder life’s mysteries and add a ribbon with a thought, prayer or wish to our ‘give and take tree’.
  • Falconry viewing area – grab a pair of binoculars to spot Mr and Mrs Minster – our resident Peregrine Falcons – nesting on the North West Tower.
  • Flying beasts and sunflowers – budding gardeners can enjoy our sensory garden and use magnifying glasses to spot guests at our mini-beast hotel.

The Great Big Bug Hunt

It’s all about bugs – looking for bugs, learning about their habitat and making our own bug from clay. Followed by hot chocolate and marshmallows around the fire.

There are also opportunities for playing in the mud kitchen, loose parts play, tool use, den building…

These activities are aimed at families with children aged 18 months – 11years. Siblings under 18 months are free.

Spaces are limited so please book early to secure your place.

Sessions are held in WIld Things’ wooded area in the grounds of Millthorpe School.

This session will run in all weathers apart from strong winds (you will be contacted by Emma if the session has to be cancelled). Please come dressed appropriately for outdoors play!
