York City will travel to Doncaster Rovers as they make their first assault on the League Cup since 2003.
It’s a draw full of intrigue. Not only is it a local derby, but Donny were the team to send City down into the Conference eight years ago.
The Minstermen lost 3-1 to Rovers in front of nearly 8,000 on April 24, 2004. The result condemned them to football’s basement, where they remained till the play-off final victory last month.
That was at the old Belle Vue stadium. City will look for revenge at Rovers’ modern home, the all-seater Keepmoat Stadium, when the teams clash in the first round of the Capital One Cup, as it’s now known.
When? In August, or to quote the official line, “Ties will be played during the week commencing 13th August 2012. However, if mutually agreed, The League will consider requests to play on Saturday 11th or Sunday 12th August 2012.”
While City were promoted last season Rovers, managed by former Wrexham boss Dean Saunders, were relegated to League One after finishing bottom of the Championship.
City’s last game in the League Cup was on August 12, 2003, when they lost away to another Yorkshire team, Rotherham United, 2-1 in front of just under 3,000.
Meanwhile, here’s a first look at the new home kit, via YorkCityNews. Instead of being Arsenal of the Conference, it looks as though City are aiming to be Arsenal of League Two…
Note the new shirt sponsors. Taking over from Pryers Solicitors are Benenden Healthcare, a mutually-owned health group based at Holgate Park Drive.
Some Twitter reaction…
