Tipster Turpin might not have picked a single winner on Knavesmire yesterday (Friday). But he just about broke even thanks to selecting a string of placed horses and placed horses throughout the day.
Now, today, it’s the big one… the last race day of the year and a chance for Turpin to trouser bucketloads of the folding stuff from the seven-race card
1.50
Turpin will be pinning much of his ill-gotten gains on a first race flyer from Mark Johnston’s yard. Master Of Finance impressed recently at Chester and looks set to hold off the likely challenge from Empress Ali over this one-mile opener.
Top weight Indy, on only his second outing this season, looks to be in with a chance too at decent odds; he narrowly gets the vote for a longshot place over Lily Rules, from Tony Coyle’s North Yorkshire headquarters in Norton.
2.20
Don’t go mad here. Turpin can make out a good case for at least five of these 11 runners. The vote narrowly goes to
First Flight, with Magic Hurricane, Educate, Soviet Rock and Fattsota all coming into the reckoning.
2.55
Richard Fahey can always be relied on to produce a Knavesmire horse, and Bond’s Girl fits the bill here.
Fanciful Angel, Mattmu and Terentum Star should be thereabouts too.
3.30
The race of the day. Just six furlongs of pure excitement that should see a blanket finish from a very well handicapped field of 20.
Can Mass Rally repeat last year’s success? The slightly lower weight this time could be just the edge needed.
Certainly in with a chance, but strong competition comes from Aetna and Watchable. Top weight Spinatrix is worthy of respect too – and might be a good value longshot.
4.10
Caution is called for in this interesting 7f maiden race with three unraced entries among the 13 runners. Turpin will be sitting this one out with a different kind of maiden, upstairs in the Voltigeur restaurant.
There is always a question mark over late-season maiden races. Have there been training problems, illness or temperament issues? Or are they just late developers that have been carefully nurtured? Too many unknowns.
Why haven’t they seen more of the track than just one or two outings? Only Akeed Champion and Mutamakkin have shown any glimmer of promise so far. It’s a pinsticker’s party apart from those two. Turpin’s pin lands on Navigate for a place.
4.45
Turpin’s a sucker for country music, whether it’s being played by the remnants of The Byrds or, closer to home, the wonderful Boss Caine here in York… so he naturally brightened up when he saw the name Nashville crop up.
So, at last, a sentimental bet turns out to be a steed with a genuinely good chance in this stamina-testing 2m2f encounter. The Nolan Fahey partnership have this son of Galileo in top form and Turpin fully expects to be celebrating with a line dancing session later tonight.
Hot Spice and Kashmiri Sunset appeal from the rest of the 18-runner card.
5.20
A teasing finale to what has been another great year for the country’s finest racecourse. If Turpin is still standing, he’ll be plunging on Giantstepsahead, who impressed greatly at Yarmouth, and even more greatly on his last outing at Newmarket, beating a small but classy field.
This race looks tailor made for the Mitchell/ Quinn partnership to finish on a high. Ribblehead has caught Turpin’s eye on more than one occasion this season, and should be giving the selection a good challenge at the business end of the race.
Shouranour won on Friday and is listed today. If the gelding runs, the tip-top form sugegsts he is a real danger too. Lungarno Palace looks a good value longshot.

It’s the last race meeting of the year and YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin is on hand to see if he can keep his great tipping run going
2.00
Roger Charlton’s Acolyte may turn out to be something special next season. A promising third at Newbury first time out, in August, was followed last month by a tidy win at Kempton – and Turpin will look no further than William Buick’s mount to get us off to a flyer.
Watch your betting slips as there is a George Bowen and a Geordie George who both look promising for a place.
But Charlie Appleby’s Four Seasons may be the one to divide that pair. The Gray/ Ryan partnership’s Charlie Croker offers the best longshot value.
2.30
There’s a hint of desperation here as 20 vie for a last hurrah before the season closes. Only a handful have ever troubled the judge.
A promising double for Secret Missile at Newmarket and Brighton came to nothing at Ascot last time out. The gelding is not without a chance of this near bottom weight mark, but is likely to find a couple too good for him.
Jamaican Bolt, Eccleston and Bogart make most appeal. But it’s all a bit lacklustre, and you’ll find Turpin sitting this one out with a minimum stake on the Tote, just to retain a little bit of interest.
3.00
This is more like it. An extended one mile handicap that pitches John Gosden’s Gm Hopkins against the handy Earth Drummer and Homage.
Don’t Call Me and Levitate have sound claims too, though Levitate has failed to deliver the promise of last season. Turpin loves to look for value, but sometimes there is no other choice but the likely favourite, and Gm Hopkins is his banker of the day.
3.30
Unraced Artist Cry and Forest Missile could be anything. The breeding points to Artist Cry having a live chance in this intriguing sprint.
But the decisive factor might just be the trackcraft that Brando has gained in three promising outings, including a notable fast-finishing third here last month, and the Lee/Ryan partnership is quietly confident that the chestnut colt will put down a marker for a big season next year.
Mick Channon’s Zuzinia was unlucky to find one better, when beaten by a neck at Ripon in August, and a half-length defeat at Catterick earlier this week, suggests he has held his form and may deliver at tasty odds.
4.05
Much depends on the going, and Malton’s Richard Fahey may have found the perfect opportunity for bottom weight Emerahldz to follow up her Newmarket win. Aramist is the likely favourite and will certainly be thereabouts too.
But Turpin’s booty is going on David Barron’s Thirsk yard to have gotEsteaming just right. The gelding saves most of his best performances for the Yorkshire tracks, and with Graham Gibbons careful steering, should be right there at the line.
4.40
Andrew Balding’s Red Rubles should have just enough in the tank to hold out against Storm Rock (Dunlop/Buick) and Mythical Moment. Any market move for Cabelo should be noted.
5.10
Mon Brav finally came good at Nottingham last time out, after a string of runs that promised much more than they delivered.
Brian Ellison has done a great job with the seven-year-old, but this apprentice race always seems to present the best opportunities to the younger steeds, and Turpin expects to see two or three others eclipse Alistair Rawlinson’s mount.
For Turpin, it’s something of a pinsticker’s event, with claims that could be made for Rousayan, Regal Dan and . He’ll be punting a little, but best save your money for the bigger challenges tomorrow.
