It’s Sky Bet Ebor Saturday, where the feature contest for four year olds and upwards becomes the joint richest flat handicap in Europe with prize money of £500,000.
But will you make any money? Here’s where your cash should go according to YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin…
Today’s feature race, the Sky Bet Ebor (3.40) attracts the cream of Britain’s middle-distance handicappers in an intriguing contest, Turpin writes.
There are positives and negatives hanging over all the leading candidates: Weekender (Dettori aboard, but can the Frankel colt defy top weight, a tall order); Blakeney Point (last season’s promise hasn’t yet materialised, and the gelding is now back up in trip, but could the addition of blinkers be the answer; Crowned Eagle (a switch in stables has worked wonders, but has he hit his peak, might not be quite good enough); Sea The Lion (hard to believe, but this seven-year-old continues to improve, but has the handicapper hit him too hard with an 11lb rise for his latest Curragh victory).
And so it goes on for the likes of Whiskey Sour, Nakeeta and Teodoro. And the selection is… Stratum. Willie Mullins’ five-year-old appears to have all the stamina credentials.
Proven at the distance (won a big Newbury handicap over 16.5f) when application of the hood seemed to do the trick. An 8lb rise for that victory still leaves the gelding at the bottom of this handicap, a full 10lb below the top rated entrants.
Turpin would normally say this race is best watched and enjoyed from the stands rather than in the betting ring. But this is the Ebor – and different rules apply. It’s time to plunge. Stratum for me!
