Yorkshire Marathon 2014
The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon 2014 returns, with people from all over Europe pounding around a flatter, faster route past York’s historic landmarks. There’s also the option to do it in relay form between friends, so head out to cheer the runners on this Sunday, Oct 12 starting the University of York at 9.30am.
The last of the racing season sees the return of Countryside Raceday, this Friday, Oct 10. Carol Mellin and her sheepdogs will be herding geese, while Eagle Eye Falconry display their birds of prey and the Countryside Market provides some festive refreshments. On Saturday, Oct 11, it’s all about the Coral Sprint Trophy and the Coldstream Guards Association Stakes, with a performance by The Corps of Drums.
David Gest’s Soul Legends
As well as being a star of I’m A Celebrity, David Gest is one of the most successful music execs in US history. He’s coming to York Barbican this Sunday, Oct 12 at 7.30pm with seven soul legends including Russell Thompkins Jr. & The New Stylistics, whose hits include You Make Me Feel Brand New. Also on the bill are The Temptation Review with Dennis Edwards, Sheila Ferguson of The Three Degrees and Motown legend Kim Weston.

Get a taste of autumn this weekend with St Nicholas’ Fields Autumn Fayre, complete with on-site produce tasting and ‘apple olympics’. You can channel your inner Mary Berry with a home-made and professional bake off, make an original gift with Heather Dawe’s willow weaving and get involved with a range of children’s activities. This Saturday, Oct 11, 1 – 5pm.
Alice In Theatreland
The Victoria Rooke School of Dance for 3 – 23 year olds presents their yearly show at Joseph Rowntree Theatre. This year, they have a new take on the adventures of Alice in Wonderland – dancing and singing her way through other worlds with The White Rabbit including Matilda, The Lion King and The Tales of Beatrix Potter to name a few. Join Alice this Saturday, Oct 11 at 7pm.
Archaeology and History Fair
The historic York Guildhall is hosting a day of exploration and discovery with York Archaeological Trust’s Archaeology and History Fair. There will be family activities, stalls from local societies and communities and talks from the experts. Find out more about the city of York or take part in some historical games this Saturday, Oct 11 from 10am – 4pm.
