York police are appealing for information after a theft at a cemetery in the city.

The thieves stole a gold chain with a locket holding pictures of the rightful owner’s parents from a grave at Fulford Cemetery, Fordlands Road.

They also took four plastic hearts on sticks.

The thieves struck overnight between Thursday, June 12 and Friday, June 13.

PC Lailah Nijaila, of York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “It is beyond belief that someone could stoop so low as to steal what is clearly a treasured family memento and items of little monetary value from a grave.

“This utterly heartless and cruel act has naturally left the victim feeling deeply upset.

“If you have any information which help to identify the callous thief, I urge you to contact the police immediately.”

Anyone who can help can contact York police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Lailah Nijaila, or email [email protected]
