Police and fire crews worked together to rescue a man from the river in York early this morning (Saturday).

The alert was issued at about 2.30am that a man was in the River Foss near Clifford’s Tower. Police officers and firefighters from York, Acomb, Huntington and Selby fire stations responded.

Police threw a life ring out to the man. Fire crews then used a ladder and lines to bring him on to dry land.

The man was left in the hands of the police.

Station manager Tony Walker wrote on Twitter: “Excellent job by all. Please stay away from the water especially during flood conditions.”
