An interesting article has popped up on the BBC News website about Alan Pegler.
He saved iconic locomotive Flying Scotsman for the nation. Alan was a “swashbuckling buccaneer of a character”, who couldn’t bear the thought of the engine being scrapped.
So – he bought it for £3K, set about restoring it – and by 1968 it was “the only steam locomotive running on Britain’s railways”.
Sadly though the locomotive ended up ruining him financially. But without his intervention the fabulous Flying Scotsman, in the National Railway Museum collection since 2004, would have been lost forever.
