More than half a million pounds will be spent on developing a brand for York.

Funding of £660,000 has been committed to “developing a shared narrative” for the city.

A report prepared for West Yorkshire Combined Authority says the cash could be spent on “3D visualisations of key developments” and “immersive technology”.


Cllr Ian Gillies, leader of City of York Council, said the local authority wants to make the most of the city’s assets. He said:

  • The story of York is thousands of years old and known across the world. It is a story that is as recognised as our beautiful Minster and historic walls.

    Yet our story is changing. We are seeing unprecedented investment in regeneration projects, creating new and exciting spaces across the city.

A report says the project will include a study on the impact of online shopping and look at the future of out-of-town retail parks.

The goals of the scheme are to create

  • a shared brand and approach with significant buy in from York stakeholders, an immersive technology model of key sites including Castle Gateway, York Central and the city centre, and a study considering the longer term impacts of changes in retailing.

Cllr Keith Aspden, executive member for economic development said: “We are ambitious for York and to help us reach our goals, the Leeds City Region have provided the council with funding to help attract greater investment to the city.


“Over the coming months, the council will work closely with city partners and communities to make sure we create the right narrative for York, one which appeals to all audiences and can help secure greater investment and opportunity for our residents.”
