A dedicated teacher, a police chief and an environmental champion are all recipients of awards in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
They join stars to be honoured, including Oscar-winning actor Olivia Colman, musician Elvis Costello and TV adventurer Bear Grylls.
Here are the York people who receive honours today.
Richard Ludlow
Richard Ludlow, chief executive of Ebor Academy Trust, has been awarded an OBE for services to education.
Mr Ludlow said:
-
I am thrilled and humbled – and I see the honour as recognition of a magnificent team effort.
Ebor has achieved a lot and I want to pay tribute to the dedicated and hard-working people I am privileged to lead.
Both at our schools and in our central team, we all share a commitment to the children and young people in our care.
Our pupils have a single chance at their education and it is our key aim to ensure their experience at school is fulfilling, enriching and relevant.
Ebor was set up in December 2013 initially to support Haxby Road Primary School, which for the previous decade had suffered a string of poor inspection reports. At the time Mr Ludlow was headteacher at Robert Wilkinson Primary School in Strensall and he galvanised a team to embark on a relentless drive to improve outcomes.
Ebor today operates 22 schools across York, Selby, on the Yorkshire Coast and in the East Riding and the Humber.
In March Mr Ludlow announced his intention to retire at some point during the 2019-2020 academic year.
Professor Sue Hartley
Director of the York Environmental Sustainability Institute Professor Sue Hartley has been awarded an OBE for her services to ecological research and public engagement.
Professor Hartley leads the institute’s research, which uses interdisciplinary partnerships to generate sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges.
She is also a trustee of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and a board member of Natural England.
Professor Hartley said:
-
I am absolutely thrilled and delighted to receive this honour and to be recognised for my contribution to ecology in this way.
I’ve always been passionate about the importance of ecological research, particularly given the global environmental challenges we are all facing at the moment.
I’m very proud and grateful, and I’d like to thank the many wonderful colleagues who have supported my career for their contribution to this achievement.
Michael Benson
Michael Benson has been awarded an MBE in recognition of his outstanding service on behalf of York Minster.
Mr Benson was the director of the York Minster Fund from 2007 to 2016.
He was also chief executive officer of York Minster Revealed, the £20 million restoration and conservation project that transformed the cathedral.
The landmark project included the restoration and conservation of the Minster’s 600 year-old East Front and Great East Window, the largest single expanse of medieval stained glass in the country.
“The award was for all those involved in the restoration of the Minster and particularly recognises the great team involved in York Minster Revealed,” Mr Benson said.
“Michael is a classic change-maker: effective, insightful and inspirational, with a clear vision, enormous energy and the force of personality needed to keep such a complex and important project on track,” said the Dean of York Dr Jonathan Frost.
Det Supt Dai Malyn
Det Supt Dai Malyn of North Yorkshire Police receives the Queen’s Police Medal for distinguished service.
Det Supt Malyn, who joined the police in 1990, has worked for the Metropolitan and West Yorkshire Police Forces as well as North Yorkshire Police.
His vast experience covers counter-terrorism investigations and high-profile criminal cases, including the manhunt and conviction of Mark Hobson, who was given a life sentence for a quadruple murder in York in 2005, and the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of York chef Claudia Lawrence.
In 2016 he became responsible for the implementation of a new collaborative police unit with Cleveland Police – the Major Investigation Team. The team investigates the most serious crimes committed in North Yorkshire and Cleveland, including murders, rapes, kidnappings and serious robberies.
Speaking about the honour, Det Supt Malyn said:
-
This has been totally unexpected, and I was completely overwhelmed by the news.
I am so pleased to accept the QPM on behalf of all the dignified and courageous families I have met in the most tragic circumstances.
Also, the challenging work we do is only possible due to the amazingly talented people I have worked with in many teams and partner agencies throughout my service, and I would like to pay tribute to them.
Also honored was Brian Keen, of Riccall, who gets the OBE for services to the community in Riccall.
A Riccall parish councillor for 16 years – and chairman since 2005 – Brian has also been responsible for the addition and maintenance of an outdoor gym and play equipment in the community field.
He was heavily involved in the establishment of a dedicated “Snow Patrol”, creating a small army of volunteers with equipment strategically placed around Riccall, able to clear paths after heavy snowfall.
