Shoppers arriving at Sainsbury’s in Monks Cross this evening were told – ‘sorry, it’s cash only’.
To make things worse, customers couldn’t get any cash because both the store’s ATMs were out of action too.
A major outage had crippled the York branch’s ability to take card payments. As a result most customers were forced to go elsewhere for their shopping.
Work is underway to restore full service to the supermarket.
Engineers from Northern Powergrid and BT OpenReach were tonight (Thursday) working on underground cables outside Sainsbury’s close to the Monks Cross roundabout.
The problem was very localised. It wasn’t affecting the nearby Asda store or its cash machines.
