North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service sent crews from York and Acomb to the scene.
Crews used hydraulic cutting gear to release a woman from one of the cars. The woman, said to be in her 50s, was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The crash blocked the junction for some time. Buses had to be diverted.
Due to a collision on Hull Road services 8, 10 and 66A will be diverting via the university. Delays are likely. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
