Many more people in York will be able to receive vital support and help, after a city charity received lottery funding.
York Neighbours, which provides practical help and support to people aged over 65, has received £40,000 a year for the next three years allowing it to expand its services.
The charity now hopes to reach more people all over the city and is also inviting more people to sign up as volunteers to help meet the growing demand.
David Casswell, chair of York Neighbours said:

We are determined to use this grant to develop the service so that more people can benefit.
Our Neighbours appreciate being covered for small jobs, receiving regular phone calls and having occasional outings. Our volunteers are delighted with the opportunities to help.
Fantastic news
The charity provides three forms of support:
- help with one-off practical jobs in the home
- regular phone calls to help combat isolation
- and invitations to group events or outings with fellow Neighbours.
It was launched as Belfrey Neighbours, through St Michael le Belfrey Church in 2012, but became York Neighbours as city-wide demand increased.
The funding is from the National Lottery Community Fund which supports projects that enable their community to thrive.
Helen Aitchison, coordinator of York Neighbours, said: “This is fantastic news as we now have increased capacity to support many more people, and to reach out to those needing a little extra help.
“We would like to thank players of the National Lottery for their part in raising these funds.”

It is some years since York Neighbours was initially recommended to me. Since then rarely a week passes when I do not have cause to ring them for advice or help.
York Neighbours have proven to be ideal, whether for everyday help or recommending more complex contacts for other areas of help.
The staff are always friendly and always ready to chat about your problems, give the relevant help or just listen and offer support.
