York’s long-awaited community stadium has a main contractor in place again.

One of the many delays to beset the project came last December when ISG pulled out as main contractor.

Ten months later and its successor has been appointed – Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd.

The news came as part of an update to councillors on the project to build a modern home for both York City and York City Knights.

At the executive meeting on October 19, councillors will hear that community partner agreements are also expected to be signed with York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and York Against Cancer this month.

They will have space at the stadium, alongside the sports clubs and commercial partners.

The plan is for construction to start this autumn, with the stadium, cinema, restaurants and other facilities opened from June 2019.

Led by project managers Greenwich Leisure Ltd, the stadium is due to cost £34m.

Council leader David Carr said he was delighted that the project was moving forward.

He said: “The stadium and accompanying leisure facilities will benefit the whole of York, with improved facilities that will be important for communities, especially in terms of health and wellbeing, education and leisure.”
