This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings in the Second World War.

Meet the veterans
  • Fri 15 Mar
  • St Lawrence Church Hall, Lawrence Street, York
  • More details

Among the thousands of troops making the journey across the Channel and landing under fire from the Germans were York men, all now in their nineties, who will be talking about their experiences this week.

They will relate their stories and revealing what impact the war had on their lives at the event on Friday (15 March) at St Lawrence Church Hall.

New play

The event is organised by the Friends of St Lawrence, with Nick Beilby of the York Normandy Veterans group. Nick says:

  • There are five remaining York Normandy veterans and we hope to have Ken Smith, Ken Cooke, Douglas Petty and possibly Sid Metcalfe in attendance.

Regrettably, our fifth member Bert Barritt is no longer well enough to attend an event such as this.

The hall’s new projection equipment will be installed by then and photographs of the men taken in the 1940s will be shown.

Playwright Helena Fox will also be there to talk about her play which brings to life the first-hand accounts of the last York Normandy Veterans and which will be shown in the York Army Museum in June.

The entrance fee to the event is by donation to cover expenses and tea and cake will be served.
