You’ve been to a beer festival. You’ve been to a gin festival.
Sat Apr 28 @ 1pm-10.30pm
But you won’t have been to a rum festival – at least not in York. But this coming weekend you can remedy that omission.
The Rum Festival stops off at the Barbican for the first time this year, bringing cocktails, food and music from around the globe.
Altogether there will be more than 100 different rums to try.
“The growth in the rum market and evolution in the variety of flavours and styles has been phenomenal over the last couple of years,” says festival founder Lucy Douglas.
“Having been to some amazing beer and gin festivals we decided to set up something for rum drinkers, somewhere fun where they could try new and exciting rums whilst listening to live music, eating great food and be surrounded by like-minded people.”
Lucy says rum is the most diverse and versatile of the spirits.
“Great on its own over ice, perfectly blended with your favourite mixer, or shaken up in a cocktail, rum is the perfect drink for any occasion.”
So what can you expect?
On arrival, you get a Rum Festival glass and a brochure detailing all the rums you can try, fun facts about each of the suppliers and the suggested garnish to complement your drink.
You have to buy a £5 token to try a rum with a mixer of your choice and a garnish.
Rum will be grouped into these different flavour categories:
- and flavoured.
Throughout the event there will be live entertainment and dancing, including steel drums and salsa, and there’s street food to buy.
