York’s new burger restaurant Five Guys is now open – and is already drawing a lunchtime crowd.

The US-based burger chain has been fitting out 47 Low Petergate – once home to the Christmas Angels shop – since August.

And this week it finally opened.

Decked out in bold red and white colours Five Guys has two floors of seating, and diners walk past sacks of spuds and inspiring quotes before reaching the counter.

There is also a small outside dining area for when the weather gets better.

Shakes and bacon

Five Guys aims to be a cut above your average fast food burger joint. Everything is hand made, and even the chips are hand cut.

This bespoke approach is reflected in the prices. A hamburger in the York store is £6.95, a cheeseburger £7.95 and a bacon cheeseburger £8.95.

You can add toppings like onions, mushrooms, pickles and tomatoes for no extra charge. But a little portion of chips is £2.95, and large is £5. The chips are cooked in peanut oil.

Drinks range from Coke to milkshakes to lager. You can also ‘add bacon to any shake’.

Five Guys is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, and Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.
