It’s the place where a thousand revellers have made jokes about holy orders.
And now The Parish, the York bar found inside a Grade II* listed church, is set for its very own resurrection.
It was revealed today (August 25) that the bar, at the corner of North Street and Micklegate, has been sold.
Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co announced that the venue had been sold off market to a “North East leisure operator”.
And the new owners intend to make improvements and re-launch the bar with a new concept as soon as possible.
Ryan Lynn, Christie’s associate director, handled the sale. He said:
The Micklegate area of York is thriving and has a great reputation for embracing new concepts and supporting new ventures, whether from a chain brand or local operators, and we are sure that the re-launch will be an exciting and welcome addition to the York leisure circuit.
Mr Lynn wished the new owner “every success in their new venture and look forward to seeing the re-launched bar in due course”.
Long history
The Parish is located inside what was known as St John’s Church until 1934 when it closed. It later became the Institute of Architecture of the York Academic Trust, which merged into the new University of York.
The university turned it into York Arts Centre which ran from the 1970s into the 1990s, before it was sold and became a bar. Parts of the building date back to the 12th century.
