Cheers! Yorkshire brewers celebrate success at York Beer & Cider Festival

Yorkshire’s top brewers converged on the Knavesmire yesterday to attend the trade session on the opening day of the York Beer & Cider Festival.

There was a real celebratory mood amongst those who attended regarding the county becoming the brewing capital of the UK with 123 breweries in all, including 19 new start-ups in 2011.

These new breweries such as Geeves and Doncaster Brewery have been very popular with drinkers who are willing to try new beers as well as the usual established names.

The beer festival has promoted Yorkshire with 209 out of the 317 beers available coming from the county. In all 59 Yorkshire brewers have the fruits of their labours on sale and the public and are drinking them with alacrity. Knaresborough Brewery won the LocAle beer of the festival with their American style full bodied “Milk Stout”.

The York Beer & Cider Festival continues until Saturday and is open midday until 11pm each day.
