The big freeze – York's Festival of Angels is back. Photographs: Richard McDougall

The annual Festival of Angels returned to the Quarter (Swinegate, Back Swinegate, Grape Lane) this weekend. Starting this morning and running until Sunday evening, bars and businesses in these streets are all delivering a colourful variety of warming winter fodder, along with family entertainment.

I took two reluctant young accomplices to enjoy the atmosphere. Have a look at some of the highlights below or better still, make the most of the unseasonably mild weekend and take a trip into town.

Nosey parker - an ice-cold penguin in Little Stonegate
Eye-catching – a reindeer with wonderful reflections and refractions
Pig's ear? Not at all! The detail in the ice is truly amazing
King of all he surveys – Freddie sits on the ice throne in St Helen's Square

A memorable anniversary year for York draws to a close
