York Walls Festival 2019
Sat Aug 10 - Sun Aug 11
Open Days at Fishergate Postern Tower
Come to Fishergate Postern Tower on both of our festival days! It is a 500 year old watchtower that’s usually closed to the public and is open from 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday for free!
Fox Lane Books will also have a stall with titles for all ages at the tower (including Horrible Histories).
There will also be a display about the archaeological dig of the underfloor of Fishergate Postern Tower undertaken last December as part of bringing in an electricity supply.
Open Days at Red Tower
The Red Tower will be open 11am – 6pm Saturday 10th August 2019 and 11am – 4pm Sunday 11th August 2019.
On the Saturday, “Barbecue Plus” is planned from 3pm – 6pm, where locals and visitors will be able to sample some dishes prepared by those living nearby. The Lord Mayor will be attending from 3.30pm.
Live music and performances:
Music and Performance Art event at The Red Tower on Sunday 11th August (17.30 – 18.15 approx.). The event is free, but tickets must be reserved via eventbrite.
Lizzey and Claire are delighted to invite you to The Red Tower for an exclusive site-specific event of original music and performance art as part of The York Walls Festival.
At 45 minutes in duration (with no interval), you won’t want to miss a second of this unique artistic experience.
Influences for this performance include the female characters in William Shakespeare’s ‘King Richard III’, in particular the use of curses, and an examination of the female psyche.
Make a Tile Workshop, York Explore
Want to get involved? Come and create a tile at the library, inspired by a story linked to York’s Walls. Maybe you want to be a builder, a soldier or a campaigner to save the walls. Or you could help tourists find their way. Whatever the tale, make it in clay.
No need to book.
Suitable for ages 8 – 12.
Found Fiction, York Explore
Having toured literary festivals across the UK, the Found Fiction Writing Desk comes to York Explore. Visit the desk and add to a short story one line at a time. Can you help co-write a masterpiece?
Writing’s on the Wall
If these walls could talk, they’d be full of stories. And during the festival they will be. There will be an incomplete sentence on the wall on York Explore’s library lawn. Finish it your way by filling in the blanks.
Saturday: 9am – 4pm
Sunday 11am – 3.30pm
Extra Events around the Walls
There will be Morris Dancing on the Walls between Walmgate Bar and Fishergate Postern Tower!
Sunday 11th August 12pm – 2pm
The River Foss Society
The River Foss society will provide information about the river and its past! They will also be demonstrating how to carry out water tests of the river and showing individuals how to test the toxicity of the river which will show how healthy it is for plants and wildlife. They will be located on Foss Islands Rd. next to the river and will be in a Gazebo – look out for them at the festival to learn more about the river. Find out more about the River Foss Society here.
Saturday 10th August 10:30 – 16:00
Sunday 11th August 10:30 – 16:00
Ian Tempest, a Red Tower volunteer, will lead a ‘Red Brick York’ walk. This will leave King’s Manor at 2pm on the Saturday, and take approx. 90 minutes to reach Red Tower.
