Remembrance Sunday

Sun Nov 10 @ 11.00 am

Remembrance Sunday

The annual gathering to remember the sacrifice of the British and Free French aircrews that served at Elvington during World War Two, together with those that have served to deliver the freedom we enjoy today.

The services take place from 11am at the French Air Force Memorial in Elvington Village followed by the Service of Remembrance at the Station Chapel of The Allied Air Forces Memorial, Yorkshire Air Museum at 13.30pm. Both events are wreath-laying ceremonies.

These events give us chance to remember the sacrifice of so many allied aircrews of many nations, including France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Poland & USA amongst many others who flew with Fighter, Bomber, Coastal and Transport Commands of the Royal Air Force and other allied services. We also commemorate the unique relationship which exists between RAF Elvington and the French Air Force whose 2500 French airmen of No.346 Guyenne and No.347 Tunisie Squadrons were based from May 1944. The only Bomber Command base to be wholly operated by French personnel.

As always, these are poignant occasions being particularly well attended and with a large community event involving local Scout and Guide groups and other children’s organisations, which brings every age group and a great deal of colour and vibrancy to the proceedings. The Service at the French Memorial between the village and the Museum is followed by the Parade which returns to the Village Green and where Military and civic representatives are asked to take the salute followed by Tea, Coffee and biscuits in the Village Hall.

Back to the Museum, our famous “Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding” lunch, served in the NAAFI Restaurant, is a great favourite on this special November day.
