One moment shoppers were strolling through York in the summer sunshine, the next they were caught up in the greatest show on earth.

A singing, dancing flashmob took the city by storm on Sunday (September 2).

Performers emerged from the crowds on Parliament Street to stage a song from hit Hugh Jackman movie The Greatest Showman.

Beginning with a single circus ringmaster, it built into a huge number, with mass choreography and even some gymnastics.

And they were rewarded with a huge ovation from the large crowd who gathered to watch.

‘Wow – this looked amazing’

There were even some gymnastics on display
The flashmob had been rehearsing since August to stage the spectacle, celebrating the 30th birthday of Home Start York.

The charity helps families with the demands of bringing up young children, and related challenges including isolation, disability, post-natal depression and other mental health issues.

Their flashmob event followed less than a week after the charity entered a Bob The Builder cart in the York BID Micklegate Run Soapbox Challenge.

Home Start York has three part time staff and 32 volunteers who run the service. You can support them by donating to their fundraising page.

The song and dance number was enjoyed by both participants and viewers alike. One of the dancers commented:

  • Thank you Home Start for letting me be a part of something so amazing!

Maybe not as giant as a NYC Times Square flash mob, but maybe I will aim there next. Wonderful day!

And a spectator said: “Wow! This looked amazing! Congratulations on your 30th year! I hope this event brought some much needed awareness as well as raising some much needed money too.”
