Dashing hero or violent thug? Dick Turpin has divided people for generations.
Now Off Kilter Theatre is presenting its own take based on the exploits of York’s most famous highwayman.
Set in the atmospheric space of the Richard the III Museum at Monk Bar, and employing a combination of storytelling, music, swordplay, and endearingly terrible horse impressions, Dick Turpin: The Celebrity Highwayman looks to be a riot.
Producers promise the show “will seek out the truth behind the legend and examine Dick Turpin through the prism of today’s celebrity obsessed society”.
Turpin is the first show by Off Kilter, set up by three young York actors Chris Lakin and Sam McAvoy, who in term time study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, and Pip Barclay, a student at the Birmingham School of Acting.
The show plays twice a night at 8pm and 9.15pm from Thursday, August 16 to Friday, August 24, all tickets £5. To book, go to the York Theatre Royal website.
