Has York songwriter Sam Griffiths come up with the quirkiest Christmas song of the year? It certainly sounds like it.

Unveiled at a benefit concert for York Mind at The Basement on Wednesday (December 11), Sam has penned an unusual short song, told from the perspective of a hostage in the Christmas hit film series Die Hard.

The concert raised more than £400 for York Mind and featured some of the cream of the city’s performing talent: Mark Wynn, Holly Taymar and Chris Bilton, The Lungs, poet Henry Raby and Sam.

Sam told YorkMix: “We were all asked to include a Christmas song in our sets. At first, I didn’t know what to do for my choice, and just got this idea for a song from the point of view of a hostage in one of the Die Hard films, which are so closely associated with Christmas.

“I wrote it earlier in the day and performed it for the first time at the concert. It was a bit of fun, and I’ve recorded it properly now.”

Sam wasn’t the only act to try an unconventional approach to the Christmas song challenge. Event co-organiser Holly Taymar embellished her sweet set with Chris Bilton by playing an acoustic mash-up of Away In A Manger with Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name.
