The moment a child’s play area went up in flames was caught on video – and has been seen thousands of times on Facebook.

The images show how quickly play equipment at Orchard Park in Huntington caught ablaze in the incident on Saturday afternoon (September 23).

One video, filmed by resident Lainy Peart, shows a fire underneath some wooden climbing equipment in a fenced off section of the park, off Badger Paddock.

Another shows a close up of the flames around a slide.

Thought to be arson

Local people tackled the fire with fire extinguishers.

Fire crews from York were called out shortly before 4pm on Saturday and extinguished the flames. Fortunately no one was hurt.

They say the cause is believed to be deliberate.

A child’s birthday party was taking place in the nearby community centre at the time.
