If you’re a fan of Lego, you’ll love this.

Construction of York’s first box park is now underway, and it’s like putting together a giant Lego set.

The former shipping containers – soon to contain start-up businesses, cafés and more – are being lowered into place by a giant crane.

With impressive speed and precision, the crew lifted each container into position. By the end of Monday (September 4) day much of the two-storey temporary business park was in place.

Community hub

Inspired by similar enterprises in London, including Pop Brixton and Boxpark in Shoreditch, Spark:York will house offices, retailers and street food traders.

The three people behind the scheme – Sam Leach, Tom McKenzie and Joe Gardham – have been overseeing the development of the park.

It was granted planning permission by City of York Council in May, and more than 260 local people expressed an interest in taking some space in Spark:York.

Aimed at enterprises which would struggle to otherwise afford office space in the city centre, the park looks set to be an exciting community hub.

The first tenants are due to move in later this autumn.
