Don’t bother looking up the long-range weather forecast. It will snow in Shambles this year.

York’s most picturesque street is set to enjoy a white Christmas, even if the rest of the city stays resolutely snow free.

At least that’s the plan – as retailers launch a campaign to bring snow machines to the cobbled street.

The Shambles Area Traders’ Association has started crowdfunding to buy the machines and transform this special corner of York into a winter wonderland.

Extra festive

“We would like to make the Shambles look and feel extra special this Christmas,” the traders say on their York Hive page.

“We propose buying a number of artificial snow machines that will be positioned as high as possible, creating the atmosphere of a wintery snowy street.

“With the narrow width of Shambles, this should be fairly simple to replicate an create a unique scene.”

To make this snowy dream come true, they need to raise £2,993.

The association plans to use the machines between 4-8pm every Thursday from November 16 through to Christmas – York’s late night shopping. If the fundraising is successful, they will host an opening street party with live music.

They say: “We hope this will help boost the many independent businesses that operate in and around the Shambles with a boosted footfall and hopefully spend.”

And once they have the snow machines, they’ll be able to sprinkle snowy magic over Shambles every Christmas.
