B&M to open new Clifton Moor store – just yards from the one that burned down

Opening soon… a new B&M store

B&M has announced it is set to open a brand new store in York close to the branch which was devastated by fire.

The discount retailer will be taking over the former Poundworld site on Stirling Road – just over the road from where the fire broke out in October.

The new store is due to open its doors for the first time at 9am on Thursday 7 February. It will create 20 brand new jobs for the local community, as well as transferring colleagues from the former store to the new site.

‘Really positive move’

Customers can expect to find a wide variety of branded products including toys, food & drink, pet range, health & beauty and homewares.

A spokesperson from B&M said:

  • We’re feeling really positive about the creation of more jobs for local people and we hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.

We are all really excited to get the doors open and welcome our new customers through the door in a few weeks.

Job roles are advertised on the B&M careers website and range from sales assistant, to floor managers and cleaners.

The store has applied to City of York Council to sell alcohol between the hours of 7am and 11pm.

The original B&M store was destroyed in a matter of hours.

Ten fire crews fought the blaze, on Saturday October 13. Fortunately no one was hurt.

But roads had to be closed and residents were told to keep windows and doors closed as toxic smoke blew across the city.

After an investigation, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said the fire was most likely started by a discarded cigarette in the rear loading store.

The blaze came only weeks after a new B&M store opened on Foss Islands Road in York.
