Want to watch Wimbledon, but not be cooped up indoors?
Head down to the Coppergate Centre and you can enjoy tennis al fresco.
The tennis tournament is being shown on a big screen daily throughout the tournament. And you can sit and watch it in deckchairs on a special green created specially for the occasion.

The idea came from Andrew Lowson, executive director at York BID. “Whether people are popping down to watch during their lunch break, spending an afternoon in the city enjoying the fantastic shopping, or relaxing after work, there should be a superb atmosphere,” he said.
“After the excitement of the matches, we hope that people will head out into the city for dinner or drinks – a great social occasion.”
Ice cream and tarts
The team will be working with York-based Digivans North to show the matches.
Viewers will be able to watch the Centre Court drama from the lawn, Coppergate Walk, or in the queue at Jorvik Viking Centre, with three screens all showing the matches.
Coppergate’s centre manager, Pippa Unwin said:
We’ve had a beach in Coppergate for the last couple of years, but this year, we thought we’d try out having a lawn.
So many people love spending time outdoors in the square each year, enjoying an ice-cream from Scoops, coffee from Carluccio’s or a takeaway strawberry tart from Patisserie Valerie, so we’re really excited to be the best alfresco venue in York for watching Wimbledon this summer for the whole family.
Many of the major stores, including Fenwick, Primark and Top Shop, remain open until 7pm during the summer, for anyone inspired to pick up some new tennis shoes, sportswear or sun hats during any breaks between the matches.
