Members of the public are invited to attend a public forum on Friday 8 February at York Explore Library Learning Centre’s cafe, between 10am and 12.30pm, to comment or put questions to York’s bus operators and the council’s transport team about the city’s bus services.
The forum will be followed by a more formal Q&A session with a panel, including Cllr Dave Merrett, from 12.30 to 1.30pm in the Marriott room of York Explore. There is no need to register attendance although spaces may be limited, so early arrival is advised.
Whilst comments are welcome on any element of the bus network, the council will be consulting on some specific service changes, including:
- Routes 21 and 35 – going out to tender for new contracts
- Routes 15, 24 and 26 – changes to the routes
- Route 14 – ceasing the operation of Sunday and early evening services
Following a decision session on 15 January, Cllr Merrett approved proposals to consult with residents before agreeing any significant changes or withdrawal of services.
Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “Eighty per cent of York’s bus network is commercially operated without subsidy from the council. The council seeks, within its limited resources, to fill the gaps where there is significant social need. Following last Autumn’s commercial service changes, and some of the emergency services we put in place, we are now proposing some more permanent arrangements for some of the bus services we are paying for.
“This forum and the question session will be an opportunity both to comment on these proposals but also any other aspect of local bus services, commercial or social.”
