The body of a man was recovered from the River Ouse in York today (Sunday, January 1).
A member of the public spotted the body in the river near Holly Terrace at about 1.30pm and called the police.
Officers cordoned off a stretch of New Walk and the river bank. Walkers and cyclists were turned away as the recovery operation took place.
A police spokesman said:
Police were called at about 1.30pm today by a member of the public, reporting that they had seen a body in the River Ouse, near Holly Terrace, York.
With the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Service, the body of a man was recovered from the water a short time later.
Officers are investigating how the man came to be in the river. We are not yet in a position to identify the deceased.
The riverside path has since reopened.
