This is a brief update regarding the discovery of a man’s body in Selby Dam at 9.30am on Sunday 18 August 2013.
We are now able to name the man who died.
He was Simon Longthorp, who was aged 24 and from the Rawcliffe area of York.
His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared on behalf of the coroner.
The inquest was opened and adjourned on Thursday 22 August 2013.

Selby unexplained death – police appeal for information
Detectives in Selby are investigating the circumstances of a death after the discovery of a man’s body in the town.
It was found in Selby Dam near Sainsburys supermarket, Scott Road, at 9.30am on Sunday 18 August 2013, by a member of the public. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The death is currently being treated as unexplained while officer establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He is thought to be a local man aged in his twenties and was dressed in a white top, maroon hooded top and trousers.
The man’s family have not yet been informed that he has sadly died.
Detective Inspector Andrea Kell, leading the investigation, said: “I need to speak to anyone who has seen the man in the Selby area during the evening of Saturday 17 August 2013, so that I can establish his movements prior to the discovery of his body.”
