Dismay has greeted the news that another York bar is going, again because of a dispute with its landlord.
The Nook, the cosy café bar on Castlegate known for its cocktails, craft beer and street food, will close in August.
Director of The Nook, Craig Barratt, was at pains to point out that this isn’t connected to the lockdown. Instead, is all to do with the rent.
“For over a year we have tried to agree on a new lease so that we can continue to serve you,” he said in posts on social media.
“Unfortunately, our landlord has pressed for rent at double the independent valuation we received.
“Even after enforced closure our landlord continued to press for this increase and would only engage through solicitors and the courts.
“With mounting legal costs, such a small amount of space and no sign of when the pandemic would be truly over, we have had to abandon our attempts to stay in Castlegate.”
New location
The landlord has now put the property up for sale.
The Nook has built up a reputation for its food, drink and friendly atmosphere. Craig said they want to recreate that in a new location: “We are actively searching now and have some good options.”
The Nook will be opening for takeaway cocktails and ‘our signature bao buns and tacos’ from Saturday (4 July).
It comes after The Brigantes on Micklegate was forced out because “untenable terms were imposed by our landlord, despite our best efforts to negotiate a fair deal”.
Regulars at The Nook offered their support. One said: “So sorry to hear this! What a supportive and wonderful place The Nook is, and will be – somewhere else.”
