Meet the legendary Henry Hotspur at the Richard III Experience in Monk Bar. Or travel further afield to join in the Medieval Day activities at Knaresborough Castle. Loads of merriment to be had at the Jorvik Medieval Festival this weekend – find out more here.
Winning fun at the races
Another amazing Ebor Festival comes to a climax with the running of the Betfred Ebor on Saturday. It’s an ideal day out whether you go for a family picnic in the paddock or a posh afternoon of hats and champagne – and if you follow our tipster Turpin you might leave with more cash than you brought. Full details here.
For a more unusual afternoon, give beetle-hunting a go on Fulford Parish Green. It’s an excuse to get mucky as well as to help Buglife gather information about this important, and rather beautiful, species. On Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am – more here.
Rather than scale Kilimanjaro or swim with sharks to raise money for charity, you may as well do so by simply having a delicious barbecue at York Sports Club this Sunday. There’s also a raffle, a bouncy castle, live music and a cake stall, with all money raised heading to Cancer Research UK – more here.
Ten years of tunes

Castle Howard proms
Another musical anniversary this weekend is the 25th Proms Spectacular at Castle Howard, with the UK Philarmonic Orchestra, fireworks and a magnificent Spitfire flypast ensuring that it lives up to its name – on Saturday, more here.
