York Food & Drink Festival

The theme for this year’s festival is Food in Words & Pictures, so expect lots of chef art demonstrations, a festival cookery book and photography and poetry competitions across various venues around Parliament Street on Saturday and Sunday as well as the usual markets, cookery classes and free sampling. From modest beginnings with just 20 exhibitors at the White Swan in 1974, York National Book Fair has grown into the largest rare, antiquarian and out-of-print event in the UK. More than 220 of the country’s leading booksellers offer a diversity of books, posters, ephemera, manuscripts, maps and prints on Saturday at York Racecourse. More here.

Don’t miss out on this fast, frothy, foam-filled fun run on Sunday at York Knavesmire where you’ll be blasted by high powered foam cannons as you raise money for St Leonard’s Hospice. Jorvik Gilbert & Sullivan Company presents The Sorcerer on Saturday at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. This was the duo’s first full-length work and involves a sorcerer arriving in a village in 1915 with a love potion that turns everything on its head, especially for Alexis, heir to the great Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, who’s due to marry Aline Sangazure, who can trace her lineage back to Helen of Troy. York Irish Association hosts a night of Irish culture at York Barbican on Saturday featuring a variety of performances including headline act singer-songwriter John Spillane, who’s celebrating 33 years in the world of music, selling 100,000 albums in Ireland. There’s also dancing by the O’Connor Academy of Irish Dance, a talk by Irish ambassador to Britain Daniel Mulhall and music from Paula Ryan. More here
