Excited shoppers flocked to the new Vangarde Shopping Park today to get their first glimpse inside the city’s first John Lewis store.
Around 150 shoppers were queuing outside by the time the official ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 9am this morning (Thursday).
“York has long been a sought after location for us and we’re delighted to be able to expand our reach to customers across the Yorkshire region, providing them with more convenient access to our inspiring products and great service,” said Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis.
“We’re looking forward to becoming part of the local community here in York.”
At the same time a similar ceremony was underway at York’s newest Marks & Spencer next door.
Along with an 18,000 sq ft womenswear section, M&S Vangarde Monks Cross also features a beauty hall, a home department and a 170-seat M&S Café with views across to York Minster.
“The new store will bring the best that M&S has to offer to shoppers in York,” said store manager, Hilary Wilkinson.
“The feedback from our customers on all the new features has been very positive so far with the Beauty section and Autograph department, along with the striking green living walls, being key talking points.”
Over at the 40,000 sq ft Next store, fashion and homeware are the stars.
“This store is about giving our customers an entire new shopping experience,” said store manager Melanie Dyson.
“This was an amazing opportunity for us to expand and create a Next store that people in the area would not have seen before.”
