York city centre – event map available at Browns and other shops
Fri Apr 10-Sun Apr 12
Many events are free but some need to be pre-booked
The streets, shops (and even a bank) are set to burst into new spring life as Fashion City York hits town with three days of varied and exciting events (April 10-12).
Fashion City York is here to tell the world how great York is for fashion shopping and to support local talent in the industry.
From tasting whiskies whilst learning about British tailoring, to the theatre of live modelling in the windows of Browns and Fenwicks, the event has a packed programme on offer.
Chic opening
Fashion City York launches on Friday (April 10) at the Attic Coffee House on King’s Square, where the spotlight will be on a fashion photography exhibition.
Fashion students from York College have worked with photography and graphic design students to compile a visual feast of brilliant new talent. At 6.30pm the bespoke tailors at Mullen & Mullen will join with Demijohn (the award winning liquid deli) in a unique partnership to celebrate the quality and elegance of modern British tailoring by inviting guests to experience tastings of a range of whisky, gins, liqueurs and more.
Hobbs is celebrating the best new spring trends with a free fashion show at 6pm.
Live window displays
The weekend continues with live window displays, ranging from models having afternoon tea at Mulberry Hall in conjunction with Paper Doll Boutique and Bang Hair, to a Jockey underwear model at Browns.
Commuter Barbers are offering guitar lessons alongside hair grooming and cycling shop Bicis y mas will be making sure York has the best dressed cyclists this spring.
Film-lovers will have a rare chance to see Advanced Style (City Screen, Sunday, April 12) which examines the lives of seven unique New Yorkers whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their approach to ageing.
Based on a popular blog and book, this film dives into the personal lives of New York City’s most fashionable seniors.
In an industry obsessed with youth, these older women dispel conventional ideas about beauty and aging and prove that with age comes grace and confidence.
Reviews claim it is “infectious”, “undeniably captivating” and “it’s impossible not to be seduced.”
Shop at city centre Fashion Village
On Sunday HSBC on Parliament Street will be transformed into a ‘one day only’ opportunity to buy clothing, jewellery, bags, beauty and children’s wear from local designers and makers. The Fashion Village will be a pop-up shop of special pieces which usually can only be found online.
Another unique opportunity is to visit the studios of local designers Harper and Carr. Greg Harper and Rebecca Carr met at fashion college and are inviting fashion-lovers to see behind the scenes of their studio and discover more about working in the industry.
From big brands to independent retailers, international designers to home-grown labels, York has something to offer every fashion-savvy shopper out there.
Fashion City York is a group of volunteers who work together with the aim of helping retailers, designers and students promote our wonderful fashion scene.
